Thought for Thursday, update on the affects of the Fed rate cut across global markets.
Following the Fed’s decision, stock markets initially rallied. The Nikkei 225 in Japan saw a rise of more than 2%, as the yen slid against the U.S. dollar. However, U.S. stocks saw more mixed results. The S&P 500 briefly surged to a new all-time high, but by the end of trading, it had declined. Market analysts attribute this to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s caution that the current pace of rate cuts would not continue indefinitely. Powell clarified that the larger-than-expected rate cut should be seen as a one-time correction rather than a signal for future aggressive cuts.
The market had been anticipating a rate cut of this magnitude based on recent economic data and inflation trends. However, by the end of Powell’s press conference, traders had tempered expectations for further cuts, pushing bond yields back up after an initial drop. Futures markets showed a shift in sentiment, indicating that only 50 basis points in additional cuts are expected for the rest of the year.
Bond markets reacted swiftly to the Fed’s announcement. Yields, which had been falling in anticipation of further easing, rebounded after Powell’s comments about the slower pace of future cuts. Gold, often seen as a safe-haven asset during periods of lower interest rates, initially surged to an all-time high above $2,600 per ounce. However, as the market digested Powell’s statements, gold prices fell back below this level, although they remain up over 24% for the year.
Analysts predict that gold could continue its upward trajectory if further easing occurs, but the current slowdown in rate cuts may moderate this growth in the short term.
Other central banks are also responding to economic challenges. The Bank of England (BOE) is expected to hold its key rate at 5%, following a cut last month. Governor Andrew Bailey is anticipated to hint at a potential rate reduction in November but is not expected to endorse a faster pace of cuts. Meanwhile, Türkiye’s central bank is maintaining its rates at 50%, and there has been no indication of immediate changes from other major global players.
On a broader scale, global markets are reacting to economic challenges posed by climate change and ongoing conflicts. Severe rains in central Europe, Africa, and the U.S. have caused widespread flooding, displacing millions and killing at least 1,000 people in Africa alone. In Europe, flooding from Storm Boris has impacted Poland, Austria, and Slovakia, leading to clean-up efforts in some areas and ongoing preparations for rising water levels in others.
Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, with reports of explosions in Lebanon and heightened conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Iran has threatened retaliation following injuries to its ambassador in Lebanon, adding further instability to the region.
In U.S. politics, a recent Fox News poll shows Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump 50% to 48%, with Harris also leading in key states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, according to a Quinnipiac poll. This data highlights the increasingly close nature of the upcoming presidential election, with potential implications for the Fed’s actions in the future.
