In attesa della riunione della prossima settimana, i verbali dell’ultimo meeting della BCE hanno fatto emergere il rischio di un aumento dell’inflazione negli ultimi mesi del 2024, ma non cambia la view sulla sua traiettoria, ormai stabilmente rientrata nell’intorno del 2%. Vero è che i policy maker di Francoforte non vogliono cantare vittoria troppo in fretta e sicuramente non vorrebbero ritrovarsi nei panni dei loro omologhi americani, ora alle prese con i commenti sul CPI di settembre, uscito ieri in leggero rialzo su tutte le rilevazioni. Anche i membri della FED si professano tranquilli e sicuri sulla traiettoria dei prezzi oltreoceano, con gli occhi che sono più rivolti ai dati sul mercato del lavoro, ma la resilienza di quest’ultimo in un periodo di taglio dei tassi potrebbe creare l’effetto contrario e dare nuovo fuoco all’inflazione.
Il fattore determinante per la sterlina sarà rappresentato dalle aspettative del mercato sulle prospettive della Banca d’Inghilterra per l’ultimo trimestre dell’anno. Si prevede che la BoE taglierà i tassi di interesse di 25 punti base in una delle due riunioni rimanenti, a novembre o dicembre. Gli operatori hanno aumentato le scommesse su un taglio dei tassi a novembre dopo il discorso della scorsa settimana del governatore Bailey, in cui si è espresso a favore di un ciclo di policy-easing aggressivo se le pressioni sui prezzi dovessero diminuire ulteriormente. I funzionari della BoE sono ancora preoccupati per l’elevata inflazione nel settore dei servizi, dovuta alla robusta crescita dei salari. L’inflazione annuale dei servizi nel Regno Unito è salita bruscamente al 5.6% in agosto dal 5.2% di luglio.
