And while it has been my intention to seek reflection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Biden’s statement follows a tumultuous few weeks in the race for the White House, which turned a pivotal corner after his performance during the televised debate on 27 June caused panic within the Democratic camp. Growing concerns over his chances – and the wider impact that his campaign could have on the Democrat’s hopes for the Senate and House – subsequently led to numerous high-profile players and donors voice both private and public calls for Biden to quit.

It’s also understood that Biden’s decision taken yesterday was highly influenced on fresh polling data which showed support for his campaign collapsing in places like Virginia and Minnesota – neither of which were previously being considered a threat to the President.

Around an hour and a half after the President’s statement, Biden endorsed vice-president Kamala Harris, as attention swiftly turns to who will obtain the Democratic nomination.

According to a poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos after the recent assassination attempt on the former President, support for Harris is roughly in line with that Trump of at 44% (with the same poll indicating that Biden was trailing two percentage points behind Trump).

With the Democratic National Convention taking place between 19–22 August, potential candidates will no doubt have spent much of the last 12 hours trying to drum up support. According to recent murmurings however, one key player earmarked as a possible contender, Gretchen Whitmer will not now challenge Harris. Moreover, with another possible runner, Governor of California, Ga vin Newsom endorsing Harris yesterday evening, momentum in the Democratic camp presently appears to be behind the Vice-President.

Zelensky Addresses UK Cabinet

This weekend Volodymyr Zelensky visited Downing Street, as the UK and Ukraine reconvened bilateral talks to discuss the conflict in Ukraine. Here, Sir Keir Starmer reiterated Westminster’s support for Kyiv as Zelensky calls on Western powers to commit more resources in their defence against Putin’s aggression.

The meeting involved Zelensky addressing Cabinet, as he become the first foreign leader to do so since 1997.

Amongst other things this included the President of Ukraine requesting that the UK assist further with Kyiv’s long-range capabilities. (This comes as Ukraine seeks to gain permission from Western allies to fire long range missiles into the Russian heartland, something which has proved highly geopolitically sensitive).

The meeting between Zelensky and the UK Cabinet follows Defence Secretary John Healey’s trip to Ukraine earlier this month. (Healey travelled to Ukraine just 48 hours after his appointment, in a clear sign of his commitment to the country’s campaign). During the trip, Healey outlined that the package pledged by the government in April – which includes 90 Brimstone missiles and 400 vehicles – would be delivered within 100 days. This package forms the latest part of the UK’s military assistance to Ukraine, which so far has exceeded £7.6bn.

With the Trump/Vance campaign criticising the extent to which the US supports Ukraine, Zelensky is evidently seeking to sure up Western support elsewhere to mitigate against the impact of Washington reducing funding.

The Week Ahead

With the world’s press firmly focused on Washington, this week gets of to steady start as far as data releases are concerned.
