Word of the Week Wednesday<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Durable Goods<\/strong>: A leading economic indicator is US Durable Goods Orders<\/strong>. A \u2018durable good\u2019 is a manufactured item but one that doesn\u2019t wear out quickly and holds utility over three years or more rather than being consumed in one go \u2013 think planes, cars, sofas etc. Durable Goods Orders<\/strong> are important to economists because an uptick in orders leads to an uptick in manufacturing and therefore supply chain requirements, which would be economic positive. A downturn in durable goods orders would lead to a build up in stock and eventually a reduction in manufacturing activity.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Sao Paulo: G20<\/h2>\n <\/div>\n
\n

This week sees Finance Ministers from across the G20 reconvene in Sao Paulo as policy makers consider growth, inflation, and interest rate pathways along with sustainability goals, squeezed supply chains and geopolitical instability.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a press conference in Sao Paulo yesterday, the US\u2019 Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen remarked how global economy remains resilient, in part due to strong American growth. With global growth coming in at 3.1% over 2023 and inflation falling across the board, Yellen indicated that reality had played out better than forecasts. In a nod to the notion of \u201cwhen America sneezes, the world catches a cold\u201d, Yellen suggested that the US\u2019 avoidance of a recession helped keep the global economy on track. She caveated these sentiments however by saying that \u201cwe remain cognizant of the risks facing the global outlook and continue to carefully monitor the economic challenges in certain countries\u201d.<\/p>\n

This comes as Bloomberg are citing a draft communique from the G20\u2019s closing statement which indicates that finance ministers see a greater chance of the global economy having a soft-landing.<\/p>\n

According to the draft document, finance ministers will consider how \u201cInflation has receded in most economies, thanks in large part to appropriate monetary policies, the easing of supply chain bottlenecks\u201d in addition to easing commodity prices.<\/p>\n

Markets will be paying close attention to developments in Sao Paulo today, with a string of policy makers commenting on economic developments.<\/p>\n

Michigan Primaries<\/h2>\n <\/div>\n
\n

All eyes were on Michigan last night for the Democrat and Republican primary elections. Given Michigan position as a swing state, followers were seeing it as an important litmus in gauging popular opinion ahead of the Presidential Election in November. Indeed, Trump recently remarked that \u201cWe win Michigan, we win the whole thing\u201d and it was here that he marginally won against Hillary Clinton in 2016 ahead of losing it to Biden during the 2020 election.<\/p>\n

Back on the Primaries, President Joe Biden and Donald Trump respectively took the Democrat and Republican nominations last night. Of the votes counted thus far, Trump took 68% of the Republican vote share, well in excess of Nikki Haley who trailed behind with 27%. Trump\u2019s victory against Haley comes just days after the former President took the Republican primary in Haley\u2019s home state of South Carolina. Hence, while the size of Haley\u2019s vote share is indicative of how many Republicans would prefer not to see Trump as the Republican nominee for the White House, last nights result makes it increasingly likely that Biden will face Trump on the Presidential ballot later this year.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in terms of the Democrat\u2019s ballot Biden had over 81% of the vote but 13% of votes cast were uncommitted. It is thought that many of these uncommitted votes were done in protest to Biden\u2019s handing of the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. Organisers of the campaign to get people to put through an uncommitted vote on the Democrat ballot had for example said, “no ceasefire, no vote”. Since Marianne Williamson dropped out from the Democratic nomination earlier in February, Biden faced only Dean Phillips as a contestant. Focus now shifts to \u201cSuper Tuesday\u201d on 5th March which will see 16 states hold primaries and caucuses.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Gaganyaan Space Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yesterday, India shortlisted four Air Force pilots for their Gaganyaan space mission which aims to send astronauts into space by the end of next year. The mission would be the first manned space flight in the country\u2019s history and would mean that India would be just one of four countries to send humans into space (though citizens of 47 countries have flown in space).<\/p>\n

The latest development comes as New Deli have announced plans to build a space station within 11 years and put an astronaut on the moon within 16.<\/p>\n
