Middle East Tensions Escalate as Israeli Airstrikes Continue<\/h2>\n <\/div>\n

Following yesterday\u2019s airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Southern Lebanon, IDF bombardments continued overnight. With the Lebanese health ministry stating that 492 people were killed yesterday, the latest developments have raised fears of further escalation across the fragile region.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, a host of senior political figures urged caution, with the EU\u2019s most senior diplomat Josep Borrell warning that the Middle East was approaching a \u201cfull-fledged war\u201d. This comes as the cross-border fighting this week has marked the bloodiest episode since the 34-day way between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. Thousands of civilians have also fled Southern Lebanon as fighting intensifies.<\/p>\n

The latest airstrikes \u2013 which Israel are calling \u201cOperation Northern Arrows\u201d \u2013 follows the IDF\u2019s strike on Hezbollah targets in a neighbourhood in southern Beirut on Friday which left several dozen civilians dead according to Lebanon\u2019s health minister.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah have vowed to retaliate, with the Iranian-backed terrorist organisation firing several projectiles into Israel this morning.<\/p>\n

Beijing have condemned the Israeli airstrikes with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi signalling support for Lebanon, while Washington have deployed further troops to the Middle East as geopolitical tensions escalate. It\u2019s understood that the US has some 40,000 troops across the region.<\/p>\n

According to The Telegraph\u2019s Adrian Blomfield\u2019s though a \u201cfull air offensive seems to be underway, Israel has not yet shown any appetite for a ground invasion of southern Lebanon\u201d.<\/p>\n

France have requested on the UNSC to assemble as the international community continues to monitor the ongoing situation.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

UK PMIs Hint at Expanding Private Sector<\/h2>\n <\/div>\n

Despite missing expectations, UK PMI data showed some signs of business activity expanding across the private sector over the course of August. With the UK\u2019s service print hitting 51.5 and manufacturing hitting 52.8, this marked the eleventh consecutive month of expansion for both sectors, though the rate of expansion eased from the previous month.<\/p>\n

According to the data, businesses cited \u201cimproving sales pipelines, alongside successful marketing and promotional initiatives\u201d as key drivers behind their growth, with technology services seeing particularly high levels of output.<\/p>\n

That said, the survey suggested that new export orders remained \u201csubdued\u201d in part because of weak demand from the continent.<\/p>\n

On the employment front, the survey suggested that employment growth slowed for the second month running, with labour market showing some signs of slowing across the manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n

Following the release, S&P\u2019s Chief Business Economist said that it \u201c[brings] encouraging news, with robust economic growth being accompanied by a cooling of inflationary pressures\u201d ahead of indicating that the data \u201chints at a \u2018soft landing\u2019 for the UK economy, whereby the fight against inflation is showing increasing signs of being won without higher interest rates having caused a downturn.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Sir Keir Starmer will take centre stage at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool today, in what will mark his first conference address since becoming PM. Amid headlines being dominated by fiscal tightening, uncertain economic conditions, and senior members of government accepting freebies, the party is seeking to deliver a message of \u2018optimism\u2019. For example, Starmer is expected to say that there is \u201clight at the end of this tunnel\u201d while pledging a “national renewal”.
