The Bank of England is facing increased pressure as inflation data released today showed consumer prices rising by 2.2% in August. While this was in line with expectations, it left traders uncertain about the BOE\u2019s next move. With inflation still hovering above the central bank\u2019s 2% target, policymakers may have to tread carefully, especially as a decision on interest rates looms tomorrow. Despite today’s soft inflation reading, the market is pricing in rate cuts for November and December, raising questions about how aggressive the BOE will be as the year closes.<\/p>\n

Across the continent, European markets showed a slight uptick. The DAX in Frankfurt gained 0.09%, while the CAC 40 in Paris was also up by 0.09%. Market participants remain divided, with nearly equal odds placed on a 25 or 50 basis-point rate cut. The Fed is walking a tightrope between curbing inflation and sustaining economic growth, with recent data pointing to a resilient U.S. economy. Although inflation has shown signs of moderation, bond traders are increasingly betting on deeper cuts, with fed funds futures showing the highest level of activity since their inception in 1988. The Dow Jones was marginally lower in early trading, down 0.04%, as uncertainty over the Fed\u2019s decision weighed on sentiment.<\/p>\n

In currency markets, the British pound is slightly weaker against both the dollar and euro with\u00a0GBPUSD at $1.3187 and GBPEUR at \u20ac1.1850, reflecting concerns over the future direction of BOE policy. The euro, meanwhile, gained slightly against the dollar, supported by expectations that the ECB may ease the pace of its rate cuts. The suspect in a recent assassination attempt on Donald Trump was charged with federal gun violations, marking the second such incident in as many months. As the U.S. moves closer to the presidential election, political uncertainty surprisingly hasn’t caused a typical risk-on move, where we’d see a flight into dollars, as we see both the DXY floating just above one-month lows at 100.819.<\/p>\n

As of now, we see a clear lead for Harris in the election according to 538, a US aggregate\u00a0polling website. Their predictions see her winning, 62 out of 100 simulations.
