Giornata di conferenze ieri in Europa, in cui il Presidente della BCE ha esordito con dei messaggi piuttosto hawkish: la Lagarde stessa ha affermato come l’Eurotower continuerà a tenere un approccio data dependant sulle decisioni relative ai tassi, dato che il Comitato, prima di qualsiasi decremento, dovrà sentirsi sicuro di poter raggiungere il target di crescita dell’inflazione del 2%. Rimpolpando il messaggio, ha commentato che si aspetta un decremento del bilancio della BCE. Oggetto di preoccupazioni sono le pressioni sui salari, che crescono ancora troppo poco, sebbene negli ultimi trimestri si sia visto un parziale riallineamento.

Negli States le vendite al dettaglio confermano quanto affermato da Austan Goolsbee, membro della FED, in merito al quadro complessivo dell’economia statunitense: vediamo infatti che i dati mensili sono passati da una revisione al ribasso dello 0.4% al -0,8%. -2,4. Infine le richieste iniziali di disoccupazione precedenti erano 218.000 e sono state riviste a 220.000, con 212.000 come nuovo numero per questa settimana e le richieste di disoccupazione continue sono passate da 1,865 milioni a 1,895 milioni.

La sterlina ha subito pressioni in quanto l’Office for National Statistics del Regno Unito ha mostrato che l’economia è in recessione tecnica nella seconda metà del 2023. I dati preliminari sul PIL del quarto trimestre hanno registrato una contrazione dello 0.3% dopo aver registrato una crescita dello 0.1% nel trimestre luglio-settembre. Ciò significa che l’economia del Regno Unito si è contratta per il secondo trimestre consecutivo. I dati potrebbero anche accendere le aspettative di un taglio anticipato dei tassi da parte della BoE che potrebbe essere intenzionata a introdurre politiche di stimolo alla crescita. Megan Greene, membro del PMC dell’istituto centrale londinese, ha sostenuto giovedì che la sorpresa del PIL è stata “piuttosto modesta”.
